The Millenials Are Coming! The New Workplace
I find it interesting that in America you're looked down upon if you stay with your parents into your late twenties. You're looked down if you want to find a job you ACTUALLY enjoy. And you're supposed to basically work until you die. I think, as a millenial myself, I refuse to work a job just to work a job. I can't find myself waking up at 55, America's retiring age, to realize I spent a huge chunk of my life working for someone else just to expect a retirement check that might not come. If I am going to do anything, it's going to be because I CHOOSE to do it. Our parents and grandparents spent all of their lives doing this because it was the "norm" or because they felt like they had to. I appreciate them for that, but in the 21st century, where nothing is guaranteed anymore, I'm going to do what I love and have a passion for...if it so happens to be building up a business and working towards success or working in the industry I LOVE...so be it.
This video from 60 Minutes delves deeper into that concept that so many of my generational peers exhibit. What I didn't like about the video was how they tried to make it seem as if the millenials are entering the work force with their thumbs in their mouths expecting every thing to be peachy keen as long as we got our way. I would like the producers to realize that it is the millenials who have taking the world to the next level at a much quicker pace than our older counter parts. Mind you it is with the thinking of "do what you love" that so many inventions, theories, and concepts were created. Think about how most creative offices are. When was the last tie you checked your Facebook profile or talked to someone on your smartphone? Certainly we may want things our way, but it is because of our way that so many people are able to do the things they are doing.
When you allow the mind the room to be creative...it creates. And that is what I feel like the millenials are doing...creating.
Definitely enjoy the video and let me know what you think!
